To celebrate International Women’s Day, we caught up with Karen Morovic, Partner/Solicitor, Head of Employment at John Fowlers. Read how she got to where she is today and her advice to all young women.

What was your very first job?

When I was still at school I worked in WHSmith. It gave me a good insight on what it means to deal with the public as a business and I enjoyed my time there. I am never one for sitting around during the school holidays. I wanted to be out working as soon as I could.

Tell us about your journey to become Head of Employment at John Fowlers?

I qualified in 2001 after training with Taylor Joynson Garrett which is now called Taylor Wessing, a very large city firm in London. That gave me a very good grounding in many areas of law including, banking, European law (six months spent living in Brussels) and construction litigation as well of course employment law.

From there I moved to carry on my employment work in a firm in Nottingham as I had met my husband by then and we moved out of London.

After a short break living in Barcelona, I joined John Fowlers LLP and quickly recognised the firm as one that valued staff in a way that no other firm that I had been part of did.

That ethos allowed its staff to grow and develop while encouraging a good work/life balance which I had, until then found elusive. Employment law was a new area for the firm when I joined and I have been encouraged to develop and grow it right up to the present day. It is a fantastically rewarding job and I feel very grateful to be part of John Fowlers LLP.

What was the most challenging part of getting to where you are today?

The most challenging part is most certainly balancing the demands of a busy career with family commitments. I enjoy a challenge though and am certainly never bored.

What does success mean to you?

For me, success means to be in a job that is incredibly rewarding and having a happy family.

How do you manage stress?

I am fortunate in having a very supportive family. Exercise is a good release also I like to swim when I can.

What are you most proud of?

My two boys.

Do you have any advice for young women pursuing their dream career?

To work hard and persevere. A good work/life balance is achievable.
